VOICE-O-GRAPH

Records are the audial photograph and at one time this comparison was almost literal. The amusement machine once known as the “VOICE-O-GRAPH” could be found on boardwalks and festive vacation spots during the mid to late 1950’s.  The machine was simple to operate: a phone booth with hand painted instructions and a 25 cent coin-op. Users would gather around a telephone receiver, insert a quarter, wait for the indicator to instruct them to begin recording, and a few minutes later the machine produced a one minute audio recording of the event.

A Voice-O-Graph record recently surfaced in the neighborhood of the shop, and it reminded me how cool these things truly are. Imagine being able to pay 25 cents for a one minute, one sided 78 rpm recording.  The Agoglia family did just that. Note the eerie, turbulent machine noise heard throughout the duration of the recording. Also listen to hear that little Rocky finally brought some prizes home from Coney. LISTEN TO THE RECORD VIA THE LINK BELOW!
